Pakistan Welcomes China’s Prime Minister

Pakistan and China share a long-standing bilateral relationship, characterised by a cooperative partnership that has fostered mutual prosperity for both nations. The development of the CPEC exemplifies this strong alliance, with one of its flagship projects being the Gwadar Port.

In a significant demonstration of this partnership, Pakistan welcomed the Chinese Prime Minister with great enthusiasm. His visit marks a notable occasion, as he is the first Chinese premier to visit Pakistan in 11 years. This diplomatic engagement coincides with the two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s Council of Heads of Government meeting, where discussions on regional cooperation and security are paramount.

Inauguration of Gwadar International Airport

A highlight of Premier Li’s visit was the inauguration of the newly completed Gwadar International Airport, a project that epitomises the collaborative spirit of CPEC. The construction, which began in October 2019, reflects the dedication of both nations to enhance connectivity and facilitate trade in the region.

Moreover, Li described Gwadar as the cornerstone of regional development, signalling China’s unwavering support for Pakistan’s economic progress.

Pledges of Enhanced Cooperation

During the visit, both leaders engaged in delegation-level talks that resulted in the signing of 13 MoUs. These agreements encompass key sectors such as security, education, agriculture, and technology, aiming to bolster bilateral cooperation further. This collaborative framework seeks to facilitate immediate developmental projects and sets the stage for long-term strategic initiatives, including the relocation of Chinese industries to Pakistan.

Moreover, discussions focused on enhancing trade, investment, and regional peace and security, all of which are pivotal in reinforcing economic stability in the region. Prime Minister Shehbaz assured Premier Li of his government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Chinese workers and the timely implementation of CPEC Phase II initiatives.

Engagement with Military Leadership

Li’s visit also included a meeting with Pakistan’s military leadership, where discussions centred on defence cooperation. Li acknowledged the crucial role of Pakistan’s armed forces in fostering peace, reaffirming China’s commitment to supporting Pakistan in its endeavours.

Li Qiang’s visit to Pakistan represents a significant step in the two nations’ ongoing partnership. The developments under CPEC and the wider Pak-China relationship suggest a bright future based on trust, respect, and a shared commitment to progress.
