Gwadar International Airport to Start Flights to Muscat

The New Gwadar International Airport is set to mark a significant milestone in its development, with the commencement of international flights to Muscat on 10th January 2025. This long-awaited debut under the CPEC reflects the growing importance of Gwadar as a key transit hub for both regional and global connectivity.

The NGIA is not just another infrastructure project, it is a beacon of the growing ties between Pakistan and China, symbolizing their partnership and shared vision for enhancing regional trade and connectivity.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently called the airport a “great example of China-Pakistan friendship” during an important meeting. He highlighted that the opening of NGIA would be a big boost to Pakistan’s economy, bringing in new investments, creating jobs, and improving the regional transport network.

A State-of-the-Art Gateway to the World

Spanning the largest area among Pakistan’s airports, NGIA has been meticulously designed to handle large aircraft, including the Airbus A380, and accommodate up to 400,000 passengers annually. Its infrastructure is equally impressive, with advanced facilities to support both passenger and cargo operations. This includes designated areas for warehouses, cold storage, and courier services, ensuring that NGIA can cater to a broad spectrum of logistical needs.

The airport’s strategic location near the Gwadar port further enhances its potential to become a crucial node in the global trade network. The successful completion of the first phase of the East-Bay Expressway has already linked the airport to the Gwadar port, and the second phase of the road project is in the works to provide even easier access to and from the airport.

A Symbol of Progress and Prosperity

The NGIA project is a testament to the strategic vision of CPEC and the shared goals of Pakistan and China. With a total cost of $246 million funded by China, the airport’s construction has brought not only modern infrastructure but also opportunities for long-term economic development. As one of the most ambitious projects under the CPEC umbrella, NGIA is expected to boost trade, foster closer economic ties, and create significant employment opportunities in the region.

In terms of air connectivity, PIA plans to expand its Karachi-Gwadar flight services to three times per week, with more domestic and international routes likely to follow. In addition to PIA, ongoing talks with private airlines from Pakistan, China, Oman, and the UAE will help expand flight offerings from the airport, further integrating Gwadar into the global transportation network.

A Road Ahead

The opening of NGIA to international traffic marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s economic evolution. The airport’s capacity to support both regional and global trade, alongside its ability to handle international passenger flights, establishes Gwadar as a crucial strategic asset.
