The Transformation of Gwadar into a Global Hub

The investment in Gwadar is reshaping the economy of Pakistan, with Gwadar Port being a central figure in this transformation. With an investment going up to $1.8 billion, Gwadar projects are accelerating regional development and positioning the city as a pivotal international shipping hub.

 

Port and Free Zone

 

One of the most prominent projects in the city, Port and Free Zone is a major hub when it comes to commodities shipping worldwide. Its development started in 2007, contributing to job creation in the region. By 2019 the port was inaugurated and the first imports were received in 2021, marking the start of this booming shipping hub.

 

Gwadar Cricket Stadium 

 

Gwadar Cricket Stadium, formally named Senator Muhammad Ishaq Baloch Cricket Stadium, began construction in 1998. The stadium officially opened its gates in 2020 and hosts various domestic matches within local competitions.

 

Pak-China Technical and Vocational Institute

 

A significant leap in Gwadar’s development came with the groundbreaking of the Institute on December 16, 2019. It is set to enhance the skills of Gwadar’s workforce, enabling local residents to actively contribute to the city’s economic growth. By September 2021, the institute was operational, offering short-term courses to prepare students for opportunities in the region.

 

Gwadar Smart Port City Master Plan

 

Completed and ratified in November 2019, this project outlines a comprehensive strategy for Gwadar’s development. It aims to foster sustainable growth, proposing regulatory changes to establish Gwadar as a Special Economic Zone. 

 

Pak-China Friendship Hospital

 

Infrastructure improvements are a key aspect of CPEC’s impact. The Pak-China Friendship Hospital represents a major advancement in Gwadar’s healthcare, with its groundbreaking in December 2019, and its inauguration in December 2023.

 

New Gwadar International Airport

 

Similarly, the New Gwadar International Airport is set to enhance connectivity and bolster trade. With construction beginning in October 2019 and official opening on 14th August 2024, this project reflects the commitment to transforming Gwadar into a major international gateway.

 

300MW Coal-Fired Power Plant

 

This project commenced development in early 2020, addressing the region’s energy needs. By April 2021, crucial agreements were finalised, paving the way for the plant’s operational status.

 

1.2 MGD Desalination Plant

 

The desalination plant aims to provide clean water to Gwadar’s residents. The project, signed in July 2021, was successfully completed and inaugurated in December 2023, ensuring a sustainable water supply for the city.

 

Gwadar East Bay Expressway

 

The expressway project was completed in June 2022, and since then, has significantly improved transportation links in Gwadar. It has facilitated smoother cargo movement, contributing to the city’s economic dynamism.

 

Future projects include the ongoing construction of breakwaters and other infrastructural enhancements. As these projects progress, Gwadar is set to become a leading global trade and economic centre.
